On the back of DVSA releasing an updated version of guidance on walk around checks for HGV's, it's timely to remind drivers and operators alike that failing to have proper procedures in place can be costly....very costly.
The following is essential:
1. Ensure adequate walk around/first use checks are carried out each day.
2. The checks are recorded in writing and defects reported promptly.
3. Action is taken to rectify defects and records are kept for at least 15 months.
Failure to comply is likely to come to the attention of enforcement and/or the Traffic Commissioner sooner or later, which could toll the bell for your operator's licence!
